Bridging the Gap: Supporting Discordant Couples

In relationships where one partner is HIV positive and the other is negative, often referred to as discordant couples, there can be unique challenges and concerns. To address these issues and offer vital support, the Partnership for a HIV-Free Generation (HFG) has trained 22 Discordant Couples Peer Educators, and Rosemary Achieng is one of them.

Empowering Discordant Couples: Monthly Vital Services

The mission of Rosemary and her fellow peer educators is clear: to provide essential services to discordant couples each month. These services include distributing condoms to promote safe practices and offering health education on topics like drug adherence and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission.

Making an Impact: Reaching 228 Couples

Rosemary’s dedication and the efforts of the HFG team have already made a significant impact. They have reached and provided support to 228 discordant couples across the Sub-Counties of Molo, Njoro, Nakuru North, Kuresoi South, and Kuresoi North. By offering knowledge and resources, they are empowering these couples to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Living the Reality: Rosemary’s Personal Journey

Rosemary’s commitment to this cause is deeply personal. As someone living with HIV, she navigates the journey of discordant couples with her husband and two children, who are HIV-negative. Her own life is a testament to the fact that, despite the challenges, a fulfilling and normal life is possible even in such situations.

Call to Action: Embracing Empathy and Understanding

Rosemary’s story teaches us the importance of empathy and understanding in supporting those living with HIV and their loved ones. By spreading awareness about discordant couples and promoting safe practices, we can create a more inclusive and accepting society. Let’s stand with Rosemary and the HFG team in their efforts to bridge the gap and empower discordant couples to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Remember, knowledge is power, and compassion can change lives. Together, let’s break the barriers and build a more supportive world for all.
